                       TO HIT DELHI-NCR SOON

    NEW DELHI: The expert of  IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's departments of geophysics and seismology department, have asked the centre and Delhi  Government to ensure preventive measures of earthquakes as a major earthquake might rock the National Capital and its  adjoining areas in the upcoming days. Besides, some to the top geologists of the country that total 11 minor earthquakes of low to moderate intensity had hit Delhi - NCR in the period of three months which indicates that a powerful earthquake could strike India's National Capital in the future.

                                        

       "We Cannot predict time, place or exact scale, but do believe that there is a

                    consistent seismic activity going around in the NCR region and can trigger in a 

                    major earthquake in Delhi," Said Dr kalachand sain, chief of Wadia Institute of 

                    Himalayan Geology, a premiere autonomous institute, run under Union                                  Ministry of Science and Technology.

           Since April 12 to May 29 this year, ten earthquakes have been recorded in Delhi-NCR by National Centre for seismology. During this period, four tremors in      Uttrakhand and six in Himachal Pradesh were also recorded. Dhanbad said that recurrent tremors of small magnitudes indicate a bigger earthquake.

   Indian Metrology Department asserted," Most of these earthquakes were of     low magnitude measuring from 2.3 to 4.5. However, a serious of such               earthquakes ostensibly warn of a major earthquake to hit Delhi in coming days. One of the reasons for increasing numbers of tremors hitting Delhi is that the local fault system here is quite active. Such fault systems around Delhi are capable of producing an earthquake of magnitude around 6 to 6.5."

Earthquake in Delhi NCR

        DELHI is also in close proximity to the Himalayas where several earthquakes of more than magnitude 8 have occured. Study reveals that there is possibility of a 

few major tremors in Himalayas region which can severaly affect Delhi-NCR.

The entire region experienced 64 tremors with magnitudes ranging between 4.0 and 4.9 and eight with magnitudes 5.0 and above over the past two years, which shows an increase in the accumulation of strain energy in the region, in the past 

two months with the latest near Nodia on Thursday. 

"NCR is just 370km  from kangra and 260km from uttrakashi, which is known for severe earthquakes, and a bigger earthquake in this fault line is bound to effect NCR," khan added. chamba and Dharamshala near kangra witnessed earthquakes 

of 6.3 and 7.8 magnitudes on the Richter scale in 1945 and 1906, he pointed out.

NCR has witnessed earthquakes of 7.7 magnitudes in 1803 and 6.8 magnitude in 1991. In the present times of increasing urban densification and failure of governments in making builders adhere to the earthquake prevention rules, a tremor of a higher magnitude can prove to be catastrophic for NCR, khan observed. 

           SEISMICITY  is also being clustered along the strike of Delhi-haridwar Ridge and the relative plate movement has been recorded at 44mm per year, which should be a matter of concern for all, the professor said," Since no prediction model for earthquakes is still available, an earthquake early warning system is a must for NCR," Khan emphasised.
